EMDR Therapy in Burnaby Heights and Online Across BC

Evidence-based support for PTSD, trauma and anxiety.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

When distress from a disturbing event remains unresolved, the memory can become "locked" in the brain with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, and feelings. EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess these memories safely, allowing normal healing to resume. It is not about erasing the memory, but about changing how the memory is stored so it no longer causes intense emotional or physical pain when it comes to mind.

What EMDR Therapy can Help With

EMDR therapy may be helpful for people working through childhood trauma, medical trauma, accident-related distress, panic, anxiety, grief, and painful memories that continue to feel emotionally charged. It can also support healing from negative core beliefs that developed in response to difficult experiences.

How EMDR Works

EMDR helps you process unresolved experiences in a structured and supportive way. Rather than repeatedly retelling everything in detail, EMDR focuses on helping the nervous system and brain integrate painful experiences so they feel less overwhelming and less stuck.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy is offered at a pace that feels grounded and manageable. We begin by getting to know your history, building coping tools, and creating safety before moving into deeper reprocessing work. Sessions are collaborative and tailored to your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions about EMDR

Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out anytime if you have more questions.

  • Some clients notice change in 6–12 sessions for a focused target; complex trauma can take longer. We will check in regularly on your progress and adjust the plan together.

  • Yes — we offer secure video sessions with adapted bilateral stimulation, available to clients anywhere in British Columbia.

  • EMDR is different from traditional talk therapy because it does not require you to describe every detail of a painful experience at length. Instead, EMDR helps the brain process distressing memories using a structured approach that includes bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping.

Talk therapy often focuses on discussing thoughts, feelings, and patterns over time. EMDR is more focused on helping upsetting memories feel less intense and less stuck, so they no longer have the same emotional charge in daily life.

Many people find EMDR helpful when they understand what happened but still feel emotionally triggered by it.

  • We offer EMDR sessions at 59-90 minutes depending on your needs. We typically start with 50 minutes and then work collaboratively with you to determine the pace that feels appropriate with you.
